Our nation will only survive if we the people challenge it to do so. Bill Moyers is one of the few who speaks for us. And yet only a small percentage of the American people will ever watch him. I dare say few Americans even know who he is, what part he has played in our government, and what he and his wife and producer Judith Davidson Moyers stand for in the ways they aspire our nation to be and to become. There are so many intelligent, well- read, concerned bloggers on Kos and other blogs - you need to break out of the cybersphere and get yourselves on the airwaves. Bill Moyers cannot hold the country up for all of us. Bill Moyers has been a hero of mine for many, many years and he is the model for whom all broadcast journalists should want to become.
Bill Moyers is one of the last great thinkers of our time. His thoughtful, storied, critical presence in American political and cultural life will be missed when he leaves the airways of our lives. It cannot be emphasized strongly enough that a nation with only a few who will intelligently criticize our nation and bring to the table the intellectual giants of our time who see our moral strengths as well as our moral ineptitude are the true standard bearers of a great democracy. Apart from Bill Moyers, where are they? The American people are fed a diet of media mediocracy and worse, apart from these other few: Daniel Schorr but he is well over eighty; Charlie Rose is an actual broadcast journalist who challenges us to think; Ted Koppel is mostly retired and infrequently heard from; and Newton Minnow is ninety something. Where are the intellectual critics of our time on the airwaves apart from Moyers? Keith Olbermann tries but over 50% of his program is drivel thanks to the media conglomerate that owns him. And that is our answer. No one owns Bill Moyers so he is free to think. Yes, free to think. And he is free to bring the best and the brightest to his table. The rest of that pathetic unintelligent bunch of hysterical theatrical entertainers on cable "news" do not serve anyone's interests except their own and corporate America and as a result we have only Bill Moyers. I fear for what shall become of us when his lone voice is extinguished by God's light.
