It began when she copied his health care proposal and then continued when she decided to define herself as the candidate who would fight for those in need. During the past month, when she wasn't working in some Rovian character attacks, she was trying as hard as she could to execute the Edwards strategic plan.
Perhaps she did this is because she never really planned to anything more than (A) be vague in a 'centrist' sort of way on the issues, and (B) make a constant effort to define herself as a Margaret Thatcher tough bitch, who was almost eager to take to to "America's enemies." But once she became an underdog, she apparently fell in love with Edwards' approach. So I'm guessing that the reason JRE couldn't bring himself to openly support Obama is because she was constantly flattering him by trying to become him, in terms of style, when she addressed domestic issues.
Just so you know where I am coming from, I am a former die-hard Edwards supporter (since 2004) who was quite depressed when he quit the race. I actually wrote some things in this diary that shock me today. I actually stated at one point that I thought John Edwards was more authentic than Barack Obama. That perception has changed dramatically.
The interesting thing is that John has now seen that his approach would not have worked, if he had been able to make the race between Barack and himself. If he can come to terms with that, then maybe he'll be able to offer Barack whatever help he can this fall.

On a completely different topic, here's an approach to solving the dispute between the Israelis and the Palestinians that makes me think of Barack Obama and the audacity of hope.
