Powell
Yes, it's the caliber of the candidate, not his race, that Powell is thinking about....
"I will vote for the individual I think that brings the best set of tools to the problems of 21st-century America and the 21st-century world regardless of party, regardless of anything else other than the most qualified candidate," Mr. Powell said at a news conference before delivering a speech to about 800 people attending a leadership forum at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
"Both of them certainly have the qualifications to be the president of the United States, but both of them cannot be," he said.
Now, a bit of thinking on this. Since Obama started making a splash, Powell has been nothing but complimentary in public about the Illinois senator, as has Condi Rice. However reading into his comments here I think will go along way toward assuring others that Obama is not another Jimmy Carter or, worse, another W. Anyone who saw the PBS documentary "Bush's War" realizes how the administration hung Powell out to dry on Iraq as he basically lost the power struggle with Cheney. You have to think that on some level that Powell, a patriot, wants this country and particularly his beloved military to recover from the eight years of mismanagement, in which he was partially involved.
I don't know if this is going to develop into an actual endorsement, but his public comments are indicative of the general mood of Republicans toward McSame. I also know that his endorsement, if it ever comes, will be marginalized by the Rove-types as being a black thing. I also know that some are NOT Powell supporters and would just as soon not see him endorse Obama. But it is yet another interesting twist in what has been one of the most interesting presidential campaigns of my lifetime.
