Kudos to Laura Bush.

There's a whole hell of a lot I don't agree on with Laura Bush, and I think her husband is a criminal who should be impeached and / or prosecuted.

But credit where credit is due. She defended Michelle Obama today:

Michelle Obama has a new defender from those who say she isn’t patriotic enough — First Lady Laura Bush. In an interview with ABC News, Bush said that Obama’s February remark that she was proud of the United States “for the first time in my adult life” was misconstrued.

“I think she probably meant ‘I’m more proud.’ That’s what she really meant,” Bush said from Afghanistan.

“You have to be realy careful in what you say because everything you say is looked at and in many cases misconstrued,” she said.

Now, this isn't much, granted. But in saying this, Laura Bush shows that she has more integrity than 99.9% of Republicans out there.

Have you noticed that Republicans love to go after the spouses of our candidates? It's a constant pattern. The nasty garbage being spread against Michelle Obama is already toxic, whether it's trying to twist a stray quote into something it doesn't mean (see above), or pretending that there's some tape out there where Ms. Obama spouts off hideous anti-American things.

Though I hope it's not so, I think the Republicans are going to top their already foul track record this year, since Michelle Obama is an independent woman AND black. So we'll see disgusting shitstorm of Republican misogyny and racism.

Can you imagine if Democrats went after spouses with such glee? We might have to keep saying things like this:

-- Cindy McCain is a drug addict who stole money to support her habit, even though she's a multimillionaire heiress.

--Cindy McCain is her husband's sugar mama. She bankrolled his political career, and still does, while trying to keep that hidden from public knowledge.

-- Cindy McCain stole the husband McCain's first wife, who raised his children and waited dutifully over five years when he was a POW. This first wife was rewarded with John McCain having an affair with Cindy, then being dumped FOR Cindy -- who was younger and richer.

So trend cautiously this year, Republicans. Take Laura Bush's example, at least in her reaction to this one statement.

If you start sliming Michelle Obama, many of us will not stand by and watch silently. You'll be asking for a real pushback. And we'll take no prisoners.
