Committee Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) said in a news release: "This is the dysfunctions and motivations of the Bush administration laid bare. The fact that they can, with near unanimity, completely switch positions on global warming to please the oil industry is shocking, and yet disappointingly predictable."
Eventually the country will realize that many of the actions taken by the Bush administration were directly related to benefiting the major oil companies, such as Exxon/Mobil. We don't, at this point, know how far or intrusive the meddling by Cheney and the Bush administration goes, but consider these questions.... was the war in Iraq started to enable oil companies and government contractors to benefit from the exploitation of the Iraq oil!? Is the political wrangling with Iran aimed at increasing the price of oil.... for the benefit of our major oil companies? The recent lift of the ban for oil exploitation by Bush, on the U.S. coast certainly benefits the oil companies, especially given that they already own or lease millions of unexplored acres of land, both on-shore and off-shore. Everything that the Bush administration has done has played into the hands of the oil industry. Here's the ultimate question: how much of this was a coincidence and how much of this was deliberate?
I would hope the Congress, after the election of Obama and a larger democratic majority will spare no resources in investigating this, for the sake of the protection of the basic principles of government and to preserve the integrity of our constitution.
