I almost always disagree with David Brooks, whether in his op-ed column or on TV. In my comment No Child Left Behin and my commend Education, Education, Education, I make the same points as David Brooks. I am far from being as good a writer as David Brooks, but the point is the same; education is the biggest issue facing the United States.
Brooks also limits the to inside the US, where I widen the issue to the war against terrorism. If we want the world and the US to be better places we must educate all the people, including parents of the unborn, babies, young children, children, K-12, college, and adults. The US needs to make this education free. The US needs to pay much more attention to reading, writing, arithmetic, the arts, foreign languages, sciences, history, religions, sex, . . .
I use the word religions to mean that people need to learn about religions other than their own. What are the beliefs and why do others have them. (Of course my fundamentalist friends will disagree).
I say sex in the sense of birth control, abortion, love, and marriage. Yes boys and girls both need to understand penises and clitorises and the effect touching these body parts has on feelings.
Education is less expensive in terms of human lives and in terms of dollars than armed conflict. People do not seem to understand this.
But finally there is a prominent conservative columnist, David Brooks, who understands an important part of the solution, education!! Let us all cheer and hope he doesn't mean no child left behind.
