The Apocalypse 2008

I am convinced we don't have to worry about the election in November because signs of the apocalypse are everywhere. I work in a bookstore in a small, conservative, christian, southern town. In the last few weeks I have had my share of surprises, and in my town, that is saying something. Just last week I had a older, white woman in her sixties purchase Barack Obama's The Audacity of Hope. When I told her it was a great read, she replied "I thought I should read it so I can decide who to vote for." Bear in mind in 2004, while attending a local homeschool group meeting, when the subject of politics came up, one lady said she couldn't remember who she voted for, it was whoever her husband TOLD her to vote for! Then, while I was helping a young white man in his forties (a McCain voter if I ever saw one)and an elderly black couple at the same time, I was surprised again. I had helped the couple find both of Obama's books and we went to the counter while I rang up the first gentleman. After his purchase was complete, he then turned to the elderly couple and asked "So, tell me, is Obama who I should vote for in the fall?" The old man said he would never see fit to tell another man who to vote for but it was most certainly who he and his wife would be voting for. I jumped in and stated "yes, I think you should vote for him." I proceeded to hand all three Obama buttons I keep on me for just this type of occasion. But my real surprise came at closing time the other night. Another white man in his forties and his young daughter had been shopping for some time. When they approached the counter it was closing time and all I could think about was getting home. In the middle of his stack was a children's biography of Barack Obama. I asked if it was for his daughter with a slight pause-I must be careful not to offend customers. He replied yes. I told him I had read both of his books and they were fantastic. He then replied "I really think he is going to win, don't you?" We began to talk in earnest, closing time forgotten, when I received my sure sign of the apocalypse. He proceeds to tell me he is a Baptist Minister! In Georgia! And he is voting for Obama. I was waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out and yell "B*tch, You've been punked!" but it never happened. I invited him to my Unite for change party. He said he would be glad to attend but could not give money right now because he had already donated $500. My faith in humanity has been restored. If the apocalypse doesn't come, I think we can look forward to President Obama!
