Before mom and I began the show, I sort of gave her the John McCain 101. "Mom did you know that John McCain committed adultery." "Yes, and he is trying to paint Obama as the Anti-Christ". Mom did not know these things about McCain and she was very angry about the Anti-Christ portrayal. Interestingly, she had heard about the ad, but did not know it was a McCain ad. She asked, "you mean at the end of the ad McCain said he approved of the message?". I affirmed, and my mom nodded her head in total disgust.
Then the forum came on. As Barack gave his answers, I pressed my mom to tell me what she thought, to see if I could get a feel of what like-minded people may think. My mom keep saying, well, he is not saying anything I have not heard him say before. Her over-all opinion was that Obama was ok. She did not question that he is a believer, he just did not say anything that was memorable.
At the end, she thought McCain won because of his POW stories. My mom was disturbed by the adultery part. But, she would not have known about that had I not told her. And, it did not matter that McCain dodged most of the questions about faith. Mom believed the stories where memorable. So, she said, for those voters its like a day at church, when those people go home all they are going to remember are the colorful stories, not the message.
So, McCain may have helped solidify the vote of evangelicals who where on the sidelines.
To me, that is a win for McCain, others may believe otherwise.
