But now all grown up and living in the suburbs of NYC, the beach and the ocean and the hours of nothing that needed doing are a distant but fond memories. Of course now we can distract ourselves with some 500+ channels of cable television and video on demand and Netflix, etc, etc. But there still lurks a summer rerun, granted just a quadrennial one, but a rerun none the less. I am, of course, referring to the summer presidential campaign reruns. And it seems we will not be disappointed at least not by the McCain campaign.
Based upon the most recent TV viewing of McCain's campaign ads, we're in for the same programming which we had to endure back in 2004. (Probably because they have thesame programming team, Rove Inc.) We will once again be treated to the usual mix of Republican un-reality shows, science fiction, fantasy, melodrama, and most assuredly the tried and true Republican version of the Jerry Springer show. And it's all mindless fare intended to take our minds off of our day to day cares like paying bills, paying mortgages, buying food, filling our gas tanks, worrying how we're going to afford heating our homes this winter, losing our jobs, getting seriously ill, having enough money in retirement, the American health care system, the U.S. education system, and, let's see...oh yeah, that pesky little conflict in Iraq and, umm, terrorism.
And the McCain campaign's central theme as the candidate himself said in his news conference this afternoon in Florida, is: "Make 'em laugh". Yes sirree, bob!. The Reader's Digest theory of political science: "Laughter is the best medicine". So, I guess, herrrreeeeeeeee's Johnny!
