The idea of foreign-policy expert Susan Eisenhower--Ike's granddaughter--running as Senator Barack Obama's VP has been rolling around in my head since before she officially endorsed him last winter (and, in my own fantasy-scenario, since before Obama even announced his candidacy).
I think choosing her would compliment perfectly Obama's unifying post-politics message, as well as entice not only female republicans, but also the disheartened women in the democratic party who supported Hillary Clinton in the primary.
The national name-recognition goes without saying, but in regional terms her presence on the ticket could also swing a lot of republican voters in the west (especially Arizona).
Tons of information on Miss Eisenhower here, here and here. Also, check out her appearance on MSNBC regarding her piece in the Post:
Plus, there's 'Why We Fight' (one of the best documentaries about US foreign policy ever made). Susan is a major figure in it. And you can actually screen all 100 minutes for free right here:
UPDATE: I'd just like to point out that I predicted, accurately, that my state senator Barack Obama would be the Democratic nominee way back in 2004, well before he had even announced his candidacy for president and back when nearly all the liberal politicos were saying "no, it's too early", and I kept saying it when the media was all but anointing Clinton and when the majority of people on Kos and the rest of the netroots were behind Edwards.
And while this will sound silly...I also said Ron Moore's re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica would be a critical smash and a revelation in sci-fi television the day the mini-series originally aired, and that the Star Trek franchise would be rebooted with new actors in the roles of Kirk and Spock, back when those two notions were met with ridicule. Hehe...
So I do have a bit of a good track record for going against the conventional wisdom, and being proven right about it in the end. Just saying. ;)
