Why do Republicans fear the truth so much?

Here's my question for today for you to ponder with and perhaps offer some suggestions. I can't seem to come up with a definitive answer myself. There are so many possible answers. The question is: "Why are Republicans such pathological liars?"

I don't get it. Over the last eight years or so we have been bombarded on a daily basis with every type of lie possible from the tiniest fib such as President Bush was not AWOL during the Viet Nam war to the biggest whoppers of all time like Saddam's weapons of mass destruction. We've all chuckled over the joke about "How do you know when Bush is lying? His lips are moving!" But these minor and major prevarications coming from our nation's leaders have gotten us to where we are today: Loathed and shunned by most of our historic allies; hated more than ever by our self-declared enemies; mired in a seemingly never-to-end war in Iraq; losing the war we should have been fighting 100% in Afghanistan; and teetering on the brink of the collapse of the United States economy.

Yet the lies keep coming in a steady stream, day after day, press conference after press conference. And this inability to speak the truth about the tiniest of matters is endemic to the entire Republican apparatus. This is truly no laughing matter. These lies are destroying the country. And we see the same pathological behavior on full display in the campaign of John McCain and Sarah Palin. What is it about the truth that terrifies them so? Is it the possibility that should they slip and let one real truth be known that this Great Wall of Lies they have constructed will come tumbling down? That one iota of truth would be like the tiniest of leaks in a dam that eventually destroys the entire dam?

And if that Great Wall were to collapse would we finally see that behind it is a place of dark shadows concealing a cowering mass of amoral power-hungry ideologues who cannot exist in the light?

The political bloggers have been chipping away for years at this wall and now finally the MSM who once could be reliably counted upon to shore up any breach have suddenly begun to chip away at it also. After all these years, I think that finally we will see that Great Wall come crashing down on November 4.
