Both of them have had one main constituency all along -- the guillible and / or complicit Beltway press, who love a good story. McCain and Lieberman love nothing better than to sit in front of a camera with one of their Beltway media chums and talk about how wonderful they are -- it's always been about massive ego, P.R. and branding, plus all the $$ rewards $$ that can come with a successful self-promotion campaign in Washington D.C.
Not that we need much more proof that Joe Lieberman has no core principles, but thanks to Talking Points Memo, here's a collection of Lieberman clips from the last presidential election, when he was still in the race. (You know, that election where Lieberman boasted of "Joementum" for being part of a tie for THIRD in one primary. Talk about spin!)
To anyone who had the stomach to watch Lieberman last night or over the last, say, six months, these clips will show an amazing contrast. Lieberman spends these 2003-4 proudly reaffirming that he's a Democrat, and taking the fight to John McCain's boyfriend George W. Bush on every front including matters of security and war.
That's right. Of late Lieberman has made a big hairy deal out of how the Democratic party is wrong wrong wrong on security, and how Bush, McCain and the Republicans have it right.
He said the exact opposite in 2004, when he needed votes in Democratic primaries. And please note that this was several years after 2001, so his later rationale about 9/11 being a wake-up call is bunk.
Conclusion: Joe Lieberman stands for NOTHING except Joe Lieberman. He's a Beltway P.R. whore who desperately wants to be in the spotlight, and grab all the glory and money that comes with it.
