Right now, I believe that only the most stubborn vote is left. Those who wait for a GD good reason to vote one way or the other. But, I believe Obama is having a hard time reaching these people for several reasons. First is that Obama is not plain spoken. What I mean is that there are millions of illiterate people who will vote. There are people who never obtained a high school degree who will vote. There are people who do not have cable tv who will vote. Many of these individuals are low-information voters. Although they may hate Bush, they are not connecting with Obama. Why? I strongly believe it is because Obama does not know how to talk the talk. Often you hear Obama talking about lobbyist, earmarks, budget deficits and tax cuts. And, I know from knocking on doors that for some people, this stuff does not connect. When you are in the trenches and it is crunch time you can't assume that people understand what is a lobbyist. Why not use the words "the powerful". In a nutshell, Obama is just not breaking it down in a way that people with less than a high school degree can understand.
Second, Obama is not using the economy to make people afraid out of the GD minds to vote for McCain. Now this may be bad, but people do vote when they are afraid of the unknown. They vote against whatever they are afraid of. Right now, they are going to vote against Obama b/c they are afraid of him. Obama's challenge is to make people afraid to vote for McCain. When Obama talks about bread and butter issues, he does not make it so that people are shivering in their boots waiting to vote against McCain. He has to say stuff like, "if you vote McCain you better not be living pay check to pay check because you are not going to be able to make it. And people like McCain made it tougher for you to file Bankruptcy. Who knows what he is going to do if he gets into office. I do not know about you, but people tell me that they are saving up a lot of money just in case McCain wins". Obama should tell people what life may be like if McCain wins and use hot button words like "risk", "higher", and "debt" over and over again. "People will face all types of uncertain risks if the Republicans are in office again, higher food costs, higher gas costs, no health care. People will risk losing their jobs and some will fall into incredible debt. If you can't afford to hang on for four more months of George Bush, how are you going to afford to hang on for four more years."
John McCain is trying to scare people by saying Obama will raise their taxes. It is time that we return the favor.
