Israel, Syria, and the Presidential Election

This is my first diary, so please, mercy?

I was traveling through the internet earlier today when I came across a AP story at TPM that talked about a peace proposal by Syria to Israel as a basis for direct negotiations.

However, one thing that was mentioned sent a cold chill down my spine:

Any direct talks would also have to wait until a new American administration is in place, Assad added, acknowledging the importance of strong U.S. backing for such an effort.

I immediately thought, as a Jew, how wonderful it would be to hear news from Israel that did not involve more death. Then I wondered at what our next president would do to advance this. I am a Democrat who proudly volunteers for Obama, but this reinforced my belief that this is the right thing to do. McCain speaks like this:

We are going to stop sending $700 billion a year to countries that don’t like us very much.

and Obama speaks like this:

"I am encouraged that Israel and Syria have renewed peace talks and fully support Israel's efforts to advance peace with all its neighbors,"

One presumably wants to cut off funding and the other wishes Israel and Syria nothing but goodwill? I am having a really hard time deciding which is better for America.
