How dare Sonia Sotomayor make something of herself?....

Debate over who Sotomayor is a sensitive one

WASHINGTON (AP) — There are two sides to Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor: a Latina from a blue-collar family and a wealthy member of America's power elite.

Yet Sotomayor did not live her entire childhood in a housing project in the South Bronx — she spent most of her teenage years in a middle-class neighborhood, attending private school and winning scholarships to Princeton and then Yale.

And Sotomayor's life and lifestyle after law school largely resemble the background of many lawyers who rise to powerful positions in Washington.

She now earns more than $200,000 a year and owns a condominium in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood of million-dollar-plus homes. Her brother, Dr. Juan Sotomayor, is a physician in North Syracuse, N.Y., whose practice doesn't accept Medicaid or Medicare — programs for the poor and elderly — according to its Web site.

Talk about a steaming pile of bull shit, this hit piece from the AP (Always Prejudiced) is extraordinary. The journalist (?) who along with the help of three of her colleagues has intentionally painted Sonia Sotomayor as a rich bitch in poor Latina clothing. What gall. I always thought that to achieve the American Dream meant improving your lot in life through diligence and hard work.

Where exactly in Judge Sotomayor's biography does it say that she was handed things on a silver platter because of her ethnicity and sex? Did Princeton graduate her summa cum laude because of the need to fill a their quota of Latinas so honored? Did Phi Beta Kappa induct her because they wanted to strut their stuff as an equal opportunity honor society? Did the Yale Law Review choose her as an editor because it balanced out the photo in yearbook and, btw, she made some awesome arroz con pollo for the annual picnic?

Of all of the things I have read and heard so far from the right wingers who are in a foaming-at-the-mouth rage over her appointment, this is by far the worst of the lot. And it is even more disgraceful in that it presents itself as a piece of journalistic analysis.

(PS...And how about that gratuitous swipe at her brother just for good measure?)
