It's already been a bad week in Virginia, the place I currently call home. Republicans swept the Gubernatorial race, with McDonnell winning over Deeds. But in my hometown of Lynchburg, the right-wing influence reverberated even more soundly as the Republican candidate for House of Delegates, a Cheney-like conservative, defeated the Democratic candidate. The race was directly influenced by the flagrant efforts of Liberty University to 'pad the ballot box' by canceling classes and busing students to the polls to vote for their 'candidate of choice'.

I could write an entire dissertation on that topic, but I digress.
The images of Dachau are haunting memories of a trip to Germany I took with my daughter in 1995. With a group of then middle school students, we were visiting all the touristy spots when someone suggested we visit Dachau. I remember feeling great trepidation at the mere thought of going there. Admittedly, I wasn't much of a history buff in school, but even I knew of the atrocities committed there.
To this day, I can't express in words my feelings upon arrival at Dachau.

Disembarking from the tour bus, I immediately felt overwhelmed with grief and sadness. It permeated the air we breathed. The camp is divided into two sections, the camp area and the crematorium, with a courtyard where prisoners were summarily executed. Honestly, I shivered walking across the courtyard. It was when we reached the crematorium that I truly lost it.

To imagine what transpired there whilst standing amidst the ruins is indescribable. It was as though I could here the voices and feel the pain of the precious human souls imprisoned there. To this day, the memory still lingers. When the tour was over, we exited the camp to linger over the memorial site, which was erected in the 1960's. It is an image I will never forget:

The audacity of any human being to link current healthcare reform efforts to Dachau is to be so out-of-touch with reality that one has no soul. This is an outrage to the very core of our society. Have you no shame, you self-appointed, arrogant bigots who hold everyone else but yourselves responsible for all that is wrong in the world?
