The Washington Independent picks up on a report from "LifeNews.com" in which Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI-01) issues this threat, even as he insists it's not a threat:
If they are going to summarily dismiss us by taking the pen to that language, there will be hell to pay. I don’t say it as a threat, but if they double-cross us, there will be 40 people who won’t vote with them the next time they need us—and that could be the final version of this bill.
Of course, the threat is exactly that. Stupak adopts high school locker room tough guy parlance here. As in, "it's not a threat, it's a promise!"
Grr!
Whatever. Numbers are numbers. You've either got them or you don't. No need to role play here.
But Stupak can't help it, and instantly turns from tough guy to victim in the very same sentence. Right after the "not a threat" line, he turns immediately to the "double-cross" claim.
And what exactly is this "double-cross?" It's "taking a pen" to his amendment in conference. A move about which he and everyone else in the House would... be given a chance to vote.
What a lousy, low-down "double-cross!" Imagine the nerve of asking him to vote on whether or not he approved of that decision! Those scoundrels!
Bart really needs to get a grip here, and maybe consider reining in the drama queen act.
