Countries are trying to position themselves so that they have access to oil and gas supplies to fill their growing needs. This has manifested itself in disputes between China and Japan over drilling in disputed territory, between India and the US over Indian contracts with Iran, and in other regions such as the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Gulf of Guinea. In some of these instances, claimants have turned to military force to assert their control.

China and India are just beginning to up their per capita energy consumption. With more than 2 billion people between them, if they come anywhere close to Western Industrial nation per capita energy consumption, it will be very difficult if not impossible for production to match demand.
