Obama Justice Dept. will defend Yoo
The Obama Administration has decided to press on with the Justice Department's defense of a civil lawsuit brought against John Yoo, a former department lawyer attorney whose controversial legal opinions have been roundly criticized by many members of Obama's legal team.
If you have been living in a cave for the last six years you may not be familiar with John Yoo. But a quick "Yoo" search on this blog or a more extensive Google search will tell you all you need to know about this fascist sociopath. I find the Justice Department's reasoning behind the decision to be both fatuous and self-serving.
This is not a good example of the change we have been promised. It just seems to be carrying on the decades old tradition of protecting the actions and deeds of a previous administration lest such examination and prosecution of wrong-doings come back to bite your administration in the ass after it has ended.
To say that the misdeeds and possibly criminal actions undertaken by anyone while in the service of the government are not actionable and addressable by those individuals harmed by them makes a mockery of our justice system. It is the modern equivalent of saying that the king is above the law. And if I remember correctly that was one of the reasons why we revolted against the British some 230 years ago.
