Now that Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, as the new top ranking Repbulican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, will be leading the charge against President Obama's nominee to replace retiring Justice David Souter, reminders of Sessions' less than stellar past as a "crypto-segregationist" are surfacing. And Sessions is fighting back, claiming that he is not a racist, that he has never supported segregation, and that:
I believe everybody has equal rights under the law ...
And while Sessions may think he's defending himself against charges of racism, we'll take him at his word and welcome him to the ranks of those who believe the rights of marriage should be extended to all Americans.
