You gotta hand it to Newsweek. First they take on that creepy bloated gasbag Oprah and her dangerous messages to her fragile, vulnerable fans, then they do a piece on a subject so many volunteer soldiers will agree with, but so few will actually admit. War rocks!
"Staff Sgt. Shaun McBride would rather be in a war zone than at home. He likes the adrenaline, he says, even the ‘fear someone can shoot you.’ He hates the petty responsibilities of home life, the bills and family issues."
Begins the Newsweek piece.
But it’s not just that being a veritable God with a gun and free reign to do almost anything that’s so much better than being back in the U.S. living what is, for many, the real nightmare of a married suburban drone in the crumbling lower middle class of the early 2000s. The added kicker is you don’t have to deal with a decision you made when you were a stupid kid that bought the goods on marriage.
"Asked the hardest part of coming home, he responds: ‘Having to live with other people. Having to deal.’ He doesn't like having to rush to pick up his stepdaughter from day care, or to get the groceries."
Now granted these are volunteers in a volunteer army, so you’re going to get some nutcases. But this piece begs the larger question of have we denigrated and marginalized the young American male to the point that many can only find their greatest fulfillment and self actualization in a war? Whatever the case, for some in today's volunteer army, war rocks.
