I saw an interview with Michael Moore yesterday about his new documentary. He says his travels around the country led him to believe that the country was reaching what he called a "tipping point," and he attributed it to a nonpartisan frustration and rage. When you look at this new poll on the public option, you can see where this nonpartisan rage and frustration is coming from.
Unfortunately, there is no tank to go stand in front of in protest. As in China public opinion is of secondary importance. And as in China, when public opinion gets too rowdy, it can be met with tear gas and high tech audio weapons like those that met the protesters at the G20 in Pittsburgh today.
Somehow we Americans need to find the vehicle that will allow us to reach across party lines and kill lobbying, kill campaign finance as we know it, kill usury. We need a nonpartisan coalition to end the insanity of treating corporations as persons under the Constitution and granting them free speech in American political campaigns.
Restoring minimal standards of democratic responsiveness to our government seems now of overriding importance, far more important than any merely partisan issues. The lobbyists have been screwing us on a nonpartisan basis, and it's time for us get out the long knives.
