tbetz has a diary up quoting a letter that Josh Marshall received from a Senate staffer.

To me the crux of his/her e-mail was the final paragraph. The question raised is: "what do Democrats stand for?" Seems like a pretty easy question. So, answer it for me, but don't give me a bunch of psycho-babble about helping the underdog, looking out for our fellow man etc.

I want an answer dammit, and I want it to be in 3 short phrases...you know, like the Republicans do it?

What does a Republican stand for? Betcha your first thought was
lower taxes, right? See how easy it is. It's called messaging and we get an f@%#$@ F in messaging.

This is my life and I simply can't answer the fundamental question: "what do Democrats stand for?" Voters don't know, and we can't make the case, so they're reacting exactly as you'd expect (just as they did in 1994, 2000, and 2004). We either find the voice to answer that question and exercise the strongest majority and voter mandate we've had since Watergate, or we suffer a bloodbath in November. History shows we're likely to choose the latter.

So, tell me in 3 short and clear statements, what the heck does a democrat stand for?

I'm betting you can't....and that's exactly why we will continue to lose elections. Our heart is in the right place but our message is lost.
Voters can't read our hearts.
