AIPAC Threatens to Take Over UC Berkeley Student Government

UC Berkeley’s student senate voted 16 to 4 on March 18 in favor of divesting from companies that profit from the Israeli occupation. One week later, in a move that was predicted by Jonathan Kessler of AIPAC at AIPAC’s recent policy conference, the 16-4 vote was vetoed by the student senate president.

Said Kessler of the UC Berkeley pro-divest initiative:

"We’re going to make sure that pro-Israel students take over the student government and reverse the vote. . . . This is how AIPAC operates in our nation’s capital. This is how AIPAC must operate on our nation’s campuses."

UC Berkley students are hopeful the Student Senate will overturn the veto next week.
