SCHA recently invited all of the candidates from both parties to sit down with members of our board and other hospital leaders from around the state for one on one discussions on health care. We are currently in the process of following up on those discussions and will be posting information on our website reflecting their views. This will include the results of a survey of the candidates asking them to respond to specific questions on healthcare policy.
As these candidates travel the state speaking to different groups, many of which you may be a part of in either your professional position or in a social or civic circumstance, we would strongly encourage you to challenge them on healthcare issues. We continue to see a focus on job development and under the current circumstances, that is where all of the candidates should be concentrating. But we need to let them know that healthcare in South Carolina is a core part of job development. Not only do hospitals need a strong and expanding workforce, but the health status of South Carolinians is central to maintaining a productive workforce. And as they discuss the need for improving educational levels of our citizenry, remind them that unhealthy children don’t learn as well as healthy ones. Just about everything that is key to South Carolina moving forward has a major healthcare component.
There are 73,000 of us who work in the hospital industry in South Carolina. If we speak with a unified voice, no matter whether you are a republican or democrat, we can force these candidates to make health care a centerpiece of their campaigns and ultimately their administration.
Thank you for your help with our advocacy program and making a South Carolina a better place to live.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Burt
