Yes, this is a K2 update...
As you might expect, we were anxious as K2 began kindergarten this year. Would he enjoy it? Would he understand English well enough to get the most out of his day? Would he make friends? Would there be issues because he is (a) adopted; (b) non-white; (c) not born in America; or (d) any combination thereof.
We're almost through two months of school now, and I'm happy to report that K2 is thoroughly loving school! The language screening placed him "fluent" in English, which at the five year old level I assume means understands what we asked and is vaguely understandable. His teachers say that he tries hard, is nice to the other kids, and has ::groan:: a wonderful sense of humor and loves making the other kids laugh.
K2 himself comes home each day proud to show us the contents of his backpack, is happily scarfing down the school lunches, and talks nonstop about his friends. We've had informal playdates with one, and are getting busier scheduling more. At this weekend's Fall Pumpkin Festival at school, kids from all grades were running up to say hi, and he clearly isn't kidding that "Mom, Dad, people they like me!"
But today, I had one of those file-for-posterity moments that makes all the hard work of getting K2 home to us, and helping him acclimate to being here in America and here with his new family, worthwhile. There's one boy, Jack, who I hear about more than any other kid in class. They love being together and are in the same kindergarten class (there are two classes per grade in our school). As 2/3 of the school population was taking advantage of a lovely fall afternoon by playing on the playground after the bell released them from their classes, Jack's mom came over. We discussed a playdate next week, then she said this:
So, Jack said yesterday he is SO glad to be in the class he's in. I asked him why, and instead of going on about the teachers, he said "because K2's in that class."
Yeah, say it with me... awwwwwwwwwwwww. And what more is there to say after that, but blessed be.
