Now this is more like it:
Obama and Democrats meet at White House over tax cuts
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama and Democratic leaders met on Thursday to hammer out a strategy for negotiations with Republicans who have shown no willingness to compromise on extending tax cuts for the wealthy.
Remember, this was supposed to be a meeting that included Republicans, but they were too busy. At first, it seemed like the GOP's snub meant the meeting was off, but by going ahead and having the meeting anyway, Democrats are signaling a willingness to act with or without the GOP.
Obviously one meeting alone doesn't guarantee a good outcome, but if Democrats and the White House unite behind a tax plan that permanently extends middle-income tax cuts without permanently extending upper-income tax cuts, they'll put themselves in a position of strength when it comes to dealing with the GOP. And more importantly, they'll finally be able to put an end to the Bush-GOP tax policy that Democrats and President Obama have promised to change, restoring fairness and fiscal sanity to our tax code.
