In the second paragraph Professor Krugman quotes Alan Simpson.
So here’s what the very serious Mr. Simpson said on Friday: "I can’t wait for the blood bath in April. ... When debt limit time comes, they’re going to look around and say, ‘What in the hell do we do now? We’ve got guys who will not approve the debt limit extension unless we give ’em a piece of meat, real meat,’ " meaning spending cuts. "And boy, the blood bath will be extraordinary," he continued.
Former Senator Simpson is not a member of the so called Tea Party. He is a staunch republican who was appointed by President Obama to co-chair the deficit commission. The point is that if "reasonable" republicans predict a blood bath, then who are the republicans who will prevent the bath. Further if republicans will not confirm an arms control treaty that is sorely needed, then what can we expect in the future.
Sadly we know how to cut the deficit while at the same time curing the unemployment problem: dramatically increase taxes on incomes of the ultra wealth; dramatically cut defense spending; and dramatically increase government spending on the nation's needs such as education, infrastructure, green energy and R&D (I say how in We know how to reduce the deficit and create jobs). Oh yes there are also some little things like going to single payer health care.
Yet not even President Obama wants the nation to take its medicine. Whatever happened to the "spoonful of sugar" Mary Poppins so eloquently tells us is what we need to make the medicine go down. Well by blocking the extension of unemployment insurance, the republicans say no sugar for us baby. In Arizona now the poor cannot even get medicine, much less sugar.
There is no question that we are going to HELL. There is no question that republican politicians are pushing us there. And yet we wonder why Bristol Palin is in the finals of Dancing with Stars. I'll tell you why, Situation Normal All Fucked Up.
