While Republican Governor-Elect Nikki Haley plays around in Washington with GOP Congressional members, we here in South Carolina are living it up old school – and I mean old school.
We’s gonna have a Secession Ball.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports 500 people are expected to attend the ball sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans on Dec. 20 in Charleston. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union before the Civil War.
Yee Haw and all that jazz is to be expected.
However, a group of people plan to crash the party. Officials with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People say the civil rights group plans to protest.
State NAACP president Lonnie Randolph compares the event to holding a Holocaust gala marking Nazi persecution of the Jewish people.
Ball organizer Jeff Antley says he doesn’t think secession was about slavery, but rather about men standing up for self-government.
Oh. My. God. These people just love to rewrite history, don’t they?
Tom O’Rourke, director of the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, said sesquicentennial organizers were fooling themselves if they thought the Confederate side of the story was going to be buried in the observances.
“I think there will be controversy, I think there will be hurt feelings, and I think that as this anniversary passes, we will question what else we could have done to tell the whole story,” he said. “But I am OK with all of that. … I think all discussion is progress.”
Well, here’s what we’re stuck in, as usual – THE PAST!
