Congressman Pence's statement:
“I am proud to endorse Marco Rubio for the United States Senate. Marco Rubio’s faith in free markets, limited government and traditional moral values make him the right choice for Republicans in this race. At a time when the American people long for leaders of principle, Marco Rubio will be a courageous check and balance on the current Washington establishment.
“With Washington spending money we don’t have and empowering the government at the expense of individual freedom, we need more leaders like Marco Rubio who are willing to take a stand for the common sense and common values of the American people.”
The stake through the heart of the Crist campaign will happen when Jeb Bush endorses Rubio, also. It’s only a matter of time.
So....where does this leave Charlie Crist? Up the creek without a paddle, as the old colloquialism goes. Once the party leaders/establishment desert you, you're in trouble. Charlie Crist knows it.
A new Rasmussen Reports Poll last week shows the establishment Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, once a runaway gimme favorite for the Republican Senate nomination this fall, now badly trailing one-time state House Speaker and longshot nobody Marco Rubio.
Seven months ago, Rubio was behind by 31 points. In December they were tied.
Rasmussen shows the upstart pulling ahead of Crist by 12 points now, 49-37. Crist's support has been steadily waning, apparently tied to his early support of the $787-billion stimulus program of you-know-who, the Democrat in the White House. In August, Crist's support was 53%.
RealClearPolitics poll average has Rubio now up by 9.7 points.
I assume that Charlie Crist, a true moderate, will shortly be announcing his switch to the Democratic Party, where he would find huge support among moderate Republicans and centrist Democrats, who elected him in the first place. Only Republicans can vote in the Florida primary for Republican candidates. Obviously it has become clear that Crist can't win as a Republican. He's too moderate for today's ultra Right-wing Republican Tea Baggers.
My feelings about Crist switching parties: I 'd rather Democrats pick up a seat with a so called moderate (ex)Republican rather than have another Tea Bagger ultra Right-wing Republican obstructionist sitting in the Senate Chamber impeding progress and reform.
