This state is deep in unemployment. We have hundreds of thousands on unemployment benefits. People have been looking and looking for jobs, eventually giving up because there's nothing out there or from being told they are too qualified.
We have even seen job fairs cut short because employers - not the unemployed - decide to pull out. How can an unemployed person win?
Decades of Republican rule here in this state has caused nothing but trouble. Now, it's at a melting point. It's hard to argue with the right-wingers because they actually believe they are "taxed to death" and that the burden of government is killing them. I suggest they remove their blinders.
May I remind people of our cigarette tax here. How about Act 388, where rich people get off almost free on property taxes. I guess if you were privileged enough to have a Republican tell you the truth, you'd vote Democratic.
However, that's not the case. They'll never relinquish power that way.
U.S. Senator Bunning's actions further prove the notion that it's better to vote your fears and allow the GOP to stab you in the back when they gain power. It's pretty much outright.
With Bunning's hostage-holding of the unemployment benefits extension, he basically told people who have lost their jobs that you DO NOT deserve your benefits. You DON'T deserve COBRA insurance. You DON'T need to pay bills when you can't find a job. You DON'T need to see a doctor when you aren't employed.
You need nothing. Be glad I am in power, is the message, because I protect you from the "liberals" who want to enact socialism. Along with Senator Jon Kyl, DeMint and a few others, Bunning says generally it's time to sever ties with the hurting people of America.
Yeah. The GOP rule here. How's that working for ya, South Carolina?
How can working people who have lost their jobs and have been struggling to make ends meet vote for people who support and push such ideals that strike within the heart of those same people. Literally, the GOP uses fear of national issues to control you while they push an agenda that disregards all of us.
Let's all face it. The Republicans DO NOT CARE ABOUT WORKING PEOPLE. They don't care about the unemployed. They don't care whether or not you are on tough times. They just want you off on your own.
Which is sad.
The GOP politicians want you off of government help, not paying taxes and supporting "freedom" all the while you elect them to sit in royalty, collect a TAXPAYER check and promote their agenda, selfish to the core. They want power - off the backs of you.
So, tell me. Why on earth as an unemployed person would you still hold on to GOP politicians as "protection" of your freedoms when in fact they want you to starve, suffer and survive without any help from them - but, don't forget to vote GOP because there is a "liberal who wants to kill your baby" or "a gay person is sitting right next to you" or "another African-American might want to be president, too."
It's all BS.
However, that BS - the brainwashing - rules you, the majority of South Carolina. Why? Look at who has been in power for decades in this state. Look has had opportunity to do something positive time and time again for us. Look at who has had the chance to make this state a powerhouse with a mixture of industry and tourism. Look at who could have balanced the budget and funded education thoroughly. Look at who could have protected voters' rights. Look at who could of allowed all married people the same rights. Look at who could allowed workers to bargain with employers more easily. Look at who could of promoted industrial jobs more proficiently. Look at who could of not embarrassed the state with affairs and damning comments on the poor. Look at who could of...
Are you finally fed up with the "could of" plan? Then stop electing the GOP and try something different.
This state would of benefited from it years ago.
I as end this column, I want it known that I am a liberal. I am a progressive. I am Democratic. I stand for the working people of this county, this state and this country. I feel the pain. I sacrifice like all of the others. I live truthfully.
I fight and argue on the basis that there is still hope. There is still time. There is still something there that we can look to that tells us we do not have to live under this type of rule in this state. That people will wake up and see what is happening to them. They will see how they are being pawned for power. They will see how they are being mistreated so the few can gain. They will end the Red State Doctrine.
They will support the same people who live and struggle just like they do. They will support those who know what it is like to hurt, support a family on unemployment benefits, wondering where the next job will come from. They will support the same people who need insurance to be affordable and expansive. They will support the same people who know the value of a dollar and how far it goes compared to how many they can count in a minute.
The people of South Carolina have a chance to change the direction of where they're headed - a chance that has never been this promising.
I urge the state Democratic Party to counter what Bunning and the entire GOP has done to the American people and that is OBSTRUCT!
Fight, Chairwoman Fowler. Fight like there is no tomorrow. Our state needs the truth more now than ever. Tell it in a way that pulls people out of the murky GOP water they have been drowning in.
I can promise you, people of South Carolina. Obstruction hurts a lot more than change.
Let's do something different this year.
