Well, for those of you who don't know, there has been a lot going on regarding space policy, by President Obama. First, he created the Augustine Committee, to review Project Constellation. The results from that report were rather controversial, but signaled that things might have to change. Then, earlier this year, Obama released his budget, which I fully support. However, Congress, as well as some state leaders, have loudly condemned it. There have even been reports of a supposed plan B (later demonstrated to be nowhere near as big as first reported).
Now, it sounds like President Obama is coming out to defend his proposed budget, with a space summit.
Both the Orlando Sentinel and Florida Today are reporting that President Obama will host a Space Summit, on April 15. Although it hasn't been officially confirmed by the White House (an announcment about it is expected soon), Senator Bill Nelson is saying that Kennedy Space Center is the likely location.
Speaking of Senator Nelson, he is asking that the president add one more shuttle flight, as well as confirm Mars as the destination of human exploration, and make NASA responsible for a heavy lift vehicle.
Nelson isn't the only one who wants to see some of those things - earlier this week, Kay Bailey Hutchison, who lost the Texas, announced her intent to introduce a Bill that would prolong shuttle flights, and also push for both commercial options, and government options.
I am quite hopeful that, on April 16th, there will be much stronger support for Obama's proposed budget.
Full disclosure - this past week, I attended ProSpace, and was picked to be Grassroots Outreach Coordinator. This is unpaid, but in the interest of full disclosure.
