First is health care. Even Republican Chuck Grassly is running on how he is responsible for more money going to rural states. The health care bill passed and no one is going to run against the new law. Further no one is going to run on passing a new law to improve the new law. Who cares about the high costs, the millions who will not have health care, the continued arbitrariness of insurance companies, . . . The answer is too few care.
Second is financial reform. Just as the health care bill and the stimulus package are too weak, a weak financial reform bill will be passed and signed into law. Will there still be variable rate mortgages that can have their rates raised beyond all recognition, You betcha. Will banks still have ridiculously high fees that amount to usury, You betcha. Will banks be making risky loans, No shit. Will Democrats run on improving financial reform, No way woman.
Third is immigration reform. For a country whose oldest city, St. Augustine, was founded by Hispanics that has states that at one point were mostly settled by Hispanics (you old timers remember Zorro) like California, to be concerned about Hispanics is a joke. The Alamo was a Hispanic Mission, something hardly mentioned by people who live in San Antonio which started as a Hispanic city. Whether you like Hispanics or not Hispanics were here before the English. To argue in favor of a wall to keep Hispanics out of the country is just plain stupid. It will not work. Of course we could always send troops and settlers into Mexico. But what the hell.
Fourth is the economy. But, hell the Democrats passed the stimulus package. Despite that employment numbers have yet to dip below what they were during the November 2008 election. Mortgage foreclosures are still a serious problem. Yeah, GM and Chrysler are profitable. But, neither company employees nearly as many employees and neither company has nearly as many franchises. But Democrats are not going to run on how much better employment is next November than it was in November 2008.
Fifth is don't ask don't tell. Sad to say most people just do not give a dam. Sadder to say many are against allowing everyone to marry. Are Democrats going to run on this issue. Hell no.
Sixth is global warming. Without a doubt global warming is the most important issue of this century. If not addressed global warming could mean the end of human life, not mention losing coastlines and cities. Unfortunately people rarely vote on predicted pain, they vote on real pain. This saddens me to no end. But democrats are not going to run on fixing global warming.
Seventh is nuclear disarmament. Representatives have little if anything to do with treaties. Unless a treaty directly impacts a Senator's state, they never run on supporting or opposing a treaty. Simply put ratifying a treaty is not something Democrats are going to run on.
So what are Democrats going to run on? I don't know? But we Democrats better figure something out fast.
