Casa Brillig had an interesting weekend...
As some most anyone who hasn't been living under a rock since last May knows, we adopted a little boy from Ethiopia late last year. Friday June 5 marks six months since he arrived in the US, and this past Saturday was six months since we'd first set eyes on him in the orphanage courtyard in Addis Ababa. I can't believe how time's flown, that it's really been that long. In that time, he's:
...doing fantastic with his English, understandable to most everyone unless he's either very tired or trying to talk with food in his mouth :-). We are struggling along with our mangled Sidaminya (Mr. Brillig is our resident expert, he can make grammatically horrid yet understandable sentences!)
...gained close to 20 pounds and over four inches since that first day in Addis.
...learned to wheedle TV time out of Mommy, Wii time out of Daddy, and quality time in K1's room whenever she has a friend over. That last one takes skill :-).
...fully charmed us, his extended family, and everyone he's met with a charming, dramatic, intense personality.
Yeah, he still has temper tantrums and there are moments I question why I did this. OTOH, I still have those with K1, so... :-).
This Saturday also was the 8th birthday of someone very special to Casa Brillig... a friend of K2's from Ethiopia. They were together in the orphanage, and we were invited to his party even though his family only invites relatives. The reason? Because, in their son's (and their) eyes, we are family. Our boys have known each other longer than they have known us, their families. It was wonderful to see them teaching the other guests games from their time together in Addis, and to see his grandmother, who'd accompanied his family on their journey to Africa to bring him home.
I'd been worried we'd be out of place. Once again, though, I've learned that adoption does far more than bring just two families together... it's given us an entire village of relatives.
I'll leave you with one final tidbit... one week ago Saturday we took off K2's training wheels on his bike and he'd gotten one or two shaky practice runs in. At the birthday party, there were a dozen kids all riding around... K2 screwed up his courage, hopped wobbily on, and within
a few minutes was keeping up with them! Yeah, stopping needs work... but way to go K2!!!

It takes less time to submit a Top Comment than it does to learn to ride a bike!!! Let's see what the mailbox holds tonite:

From cskendrick:
Jay Elias, in his own diary, spells out the inevitable end of the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in a way that is clear to all readers. Read it all but the money quote would be..
{The occupation} takes more soldiers, more weapons, more technology, and more immoral acts to preserve it each year. Show everyone the tipping point that is fast approaching.
There are many debates as to how best to do this. My take is that they don't need to be answered. All of them in combination will probably be required.

I really should hate myself for leading off with this one from DC Scott. But I don't, now that I've wiped the monitor and keyboard off. Read the resulting thread too for more goodies.

I remember when virgomusic first tried her hand at gathering mojo, using the mojo-to-excel methodology of cskendrick and sardonyx. Now you'd never know she hasn't been doing this for decades! (Just tell me it doesn't feel like you have been, my friend!
