Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-LA), the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate against incumbent Sen. David Vitter, is out with a new ad challenging Vitter on women's issues.
The ad begins with video of Vitter admitting his involvement in a prostitution ring and quickly turns to Vitter's decision to allow a staffer to keep his job working on women's issue even after that staffer stabbed his ex-girlfriend. The ad argues that those weren't Vitter's worst transgressions, however, pointing to Vitter's votes against equal pay for equal work, coverage for mammograms, and against protections for women who are raped on the job.
Watch it here:
In addition to softening Vitter's support from women, Melancon's larger goal is to make this election a referendum on Vitter. If he can do that, he actually stands a shot at winning. So far, partly aided by the Republican challenger to Vitter, Melancon has been successful in defining this election as being about Vitter. So even though this race might not yet be a top tier pickup opportunity, it's definitely one to keep a close eye on.
