I say listen to Rand Paul.
"The bottom line is: I'm not an expert, so don't give me the power in Washington to be making rules," Paul said at a recent campaign stop.
Who could disagree? Unfortunately, Paul wasn't done:
"You live here, and you have to work in the mines. You'd try to make good rules to protect your people here. If you don't, I'm thinking that no one will apply for those jobs."
People don't become coal miners and face death by accident or black lung disease because it's a glamorous gig, but out of economic necessity. That's why big coal gets away with exploiting this workforce. Those miners don't have anywhere else to go.
So for Rand Paul, the two options are for people to die as miners to save these guys a few bucks, or be unemployed and die from starvation.
The Jack Conway campaign has argued that Paul is "too risky". There's no "risk" here. Everyone knows exactly what they'll get out of Paul.
