The truth is that the only answer I can think of is that minority leader, Bob McConnell is dumber. The only problem is with a choice of dumb and dumber what do I say?
And then we have the Don't Ask Don't Tell nonsense. Yeah, I talk to gays and lesbians about voting. Let me tell you they are mad as hell. First, President Obama did not work hard to get the votes break the filibuster. Second, the democrats did not insist on republicans really talking. Remember filibusters are about talk. No one even considered staying up all night or making the republicans talk for days. What are they going to do? Pass tax cuts? And third instead of allowing a judge's order to stand that would kill DADT, the Obama administration is appealing the decision.
So tell me what do I tell gays and lesbians I talk to, when they bring all this up? How are democrats better for them than republicans, they ask? After all republicans, okay Log Cabin Republicans, brought the suit. Just what are democrats doing for them? I do not have an answer. So tell me what is the answer?
Then, I talk to unemployed voters. They ask me are they any better off under democrats than republicans? I say yes. I get a no. I tell them that jobs are coming. They ask when? I say soon. They say that is not what they hear from the administration's economic advisers. I say well it would harder to find a job under republicans. To which I get get the response is a .1% chance really that much better than a .0001% chance. I don't have an answer. They say they voted, they expected change and they did not get change.
I talk to people in nursing homes. I ask did they get their medicine checks. They say yeah, but 250 dollars didn't make a damn bit of difference. I talk to nurses. They tell me they have more work and the home is getting less money, and therefore is laying off nursing assistants. I say what more work. They say this form called an MDS form that must be filled out for all new patients used to take an hour and a half to fill out and now takes three hours. Then they tell me that for complex patients coming from the hospital, the home receives less money from medicare. So they ask why should they vote democratic when the Obams administration has made medical care in nursing homes worse than it was under Bush. I don't have an answer to their specific issues.
So I ask why are democratic politicians harming themselves? Do they really think they will get elected on the premise that they do less harm than republicans? I mean really. I have seen excellent diaries on GOTV, but when faced with these questions I just do not have answers. Do you?
