Sen. Tom Harkin calls Republican Party a 'cult'

In responding to the House Republicans' "Cut, Cap and Balance" proposal, Sen. Tom Harkin let a little truth slip out:

"The sad thing is America no longer has a two-party system," Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said at a press conference Wednesday. "One of our two parties has morphed into kind of a cult driven by a singular fixation and obsession: preserving tax breaks for the wealthy at all costs."

Of course the Grand Old Party—or is that Grand Old Cult?—has morphed in more ways than one. Remember this from 2009?

This cannot pass. What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn’t pass.

That would be Michele Bachmann, current darling of the craziest wing of the Republican Party Cult, encouraging her followers to kill themselves in order to stop health care reform from passing. By the way, Michele, how'd that work out for you?

Let's see ... claims that their crazy ideas are inspired by God? Check. Encouraging followers to commit suicide? Check. Okay, so they haven't actually built a secret compound and started stocking up on Kool-Aid and cyanide (yet). But if you see Republicans sporting new black and white Nikes, watch out.
