On Aug. 21, the google cache displayed those 157 comments here:
But also on Aug. 21, Meehan’s blog itself showed only 17 comments.
http://www.meehanforcongress.com/...
With one exception, all of those comments are negative and, in addition to criticizing his support for Israel and his display of absurd ignorance about Iran, many comments criticized Meehan for apparently erasing all of the first batch of comments. The one exceptional comment was Meehan’s own — he typed the word, “Read.”
This morning, the same google cache that posted the original 157 comments now displays Meehan's original letter to his constituents announcing his planned trip to Israel, but it shows ZERO comments, and says, "comments are closed."
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/...
What's going on?
I don't know how the technology works on google caches: did somebody have to request google to scrub the comments originally cached on the Pennsylvania representative's blog from the cache?
We think the congressman should hear what his constituents have to say; we think that in a free and open political system, EVERYONE should hear what the congressman's constituents think of his travel plans.
So here's a screen shot of the first and second set of comments to Representative Meehan's announcement:

Meehan's letter:
Traveling to Israel

Next week, I will be traveling to Israel as a member of a Congressional delegation that will meet with senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders to discuss the security situation in the Middle East.
The last several months have seen dramatic changes in the Middle East. Uprisings in Egypt, Syria, Libya and several other nations have produced geopolitical repercussions that will be felt for decades to come. Iran, through its support for radical Islamic terrorist groups and development of nuclear weapons, poses an increasingly dangerous risk to America and our allies worldwide.
These changes will have a profound impact on the foreign policy interests of both Israel and the United States, and regular dialogue between our two nations enables us to work together more effectively to ensure our mutual security. This trip, sponsored by the American Israel Education Fund and funded without the use of any taxpayer dollars, is an opportunity for members of Congress to continue this critical dialogue with Israel’s leadership and enhance cooperation between our nations.
As Chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, I’ve held hearings that examine the unrest in the Middle East and its implications for American antiterrorism efforts, as well as the threat posed by Hezbollah, a terrorist group sponsored by Iran. I look forward to discussing these issues with our Israeli allies and reaffirming our commitment to winning the worldwide fight against terrorism.

There is a reason that members of Congress are not supposed to accept free trips from lobbyists and foreign governments, and the fact that Congress has voted thorough a specific exemption for Israel does not erase the questions from the public mind as to why members of Congress voted into office and paid from US taxpayer dollars, are using that taxpayer-funded time to act as the "Vichy Government" for a foreign power, let alone accepting trips to Israel for a week of obvious political indoctrination!
No government can serve two masters, and a government that serves Israel cannot serve the American people. A friend to Israel is no friend of America. America needs leaders who will put America first, second, and third.
Please remember who you are supposed to work for and represent. This election I am making it my one mission that every politician who screams about how much they love Israel will be voted out of office, so that they free to go live there for the rest of their lives.

Well, it's not like you have anything more important to do in your own country. We're so lucky to have misrepresentatives like you that put the agenda of another country before the needs of your own people who elected you to office and pay your salary. We know you need a vacation from accepting campaign contributions from mega-corporations, Wall St and Israel. We will be happy to accommodate you all. All the dual citizens, Israel-firsters, endless war and occupation supporters, transnationalists, open border/North American Union traitors, central bank supporters bringing our country to destruction as the Congress go on indoctri-cation in Israel, you all need to be removed from office ASAP. Give the war crimes a break, stop making us more enemies by colluding to attack Iran and Syria next with another government that is also committing war crimes, even against US! Remember the Israeli spy rings in America, the aid flotilla, the USS Liberty, and the Dancing Israelis on 9/11. Get a grip on who you are sucking up to.

I agree with you fully Mike Rivero! I don't know how someone could get elected to kindergarten
dogcatcher who could not see the obvious conflict of interest in going to israel-----free or not.
Bad (good?) things happen on those trips. NJ Governor McGreevey got a gay lover who turned out to be a mossad agent on one of those trips! McGreevey loved his mossad sexionage lover so much he brought him back to NJ to make him Home Land Insecurity Director of New Jewsey!
Mossad will deliver sexpionage agents to America, you don't have to go all the way to israhell for them. Ask Bill Clinton, he laid back and let it happen without even leaving home!

Congress members are not allowed to take such trips if sponsored by groups which employ registered lobbyists, which Aipac does. So to get around the law, Aipac established AIEF as a 501c3 which has no lobbyists on its payroll. In fact, AIEF has NO employees on its payroll according to its IRS 990 report. Aipac "lends" AIEF its staff to organize these grand tours of the Israeli heartland. Because members may accept trips from non-profits, they can do a legal end around ethics laws by lining up at the AIEF trough for a generous feeding.

Dear Mr. Meehan,
from reading the posts here it's quite obvious how the majority of people feel about your trip to israel.
What have you learned from this?
I hope for you that you take these comments seriously, because the tide is slowly changing, people are waking up and there will come a time when all bets are off and the traitors will be visited in the small hours.
Is your life really worth those thirty pieces of silver?

You sir are a disgrace to this nation. You fail to represent the people of this nation, but are more than happy to prostitute yourself to Israhell. You are a traitor, a sellout and a shining example of what is wrong with OUR congress. Here is to hoping your plane crashes, and saves us voting you out next election. I curse you and all who sail in your ship, whore to Israel, traitor to America....enough said...

Why are you sucking up to an apartheid state like Israel. They treat others as second class citizens. The Israeli government is racist. They put Palestinians in the same kind of "townships" that the South African government put the black citizens in. Israel has nuclear weapons but will not acknowledge it and will not sign the Nuclear Non Proliferation Agreement. They refuse to allow inspection of their nuclear facilities in accordance with international law.
No one can serve two governments. To which do you owe allegiance.

I find it despicable that members of this government spend time fawning over Israel and sucking the teat of AIPAC when veterans in this country are sleeping in the street, infrastructure is crumbling, and jobs are being offshored faster than you can say "your unemployment benefits are running out next week." Your allegiance to a foreign power whose interests are not those of the US is treasonous. Out with you!

Mr. Meehan -- if it were at all possible I would wish you and your fellow "travelers" to Israel to be brought up on charges of high treason, convicted, and hung from the neck until dead. We would then start on those who are equally attached at the wallet to our deadly enemy Israel, but are otherwise indisposed to take this particular trip. By this means we would surely eliminate nearly 95% of "our" so-called Congress and thus begin to restore this once-great nation.

Please stay in Israel. After living there for a short while, you will see what your "friends" are really like. They are the most disgusting, vile, racist and hate-mongering people ever to exist. I hope you will be happy with them but do not expect them to treat you like an equal, you are lower than an animal according to their beliefs.

> Iran, through its support for radical Islamic terrorist groups and
development of nuclear weapons, poses an increasingly dangerous risk to
America and our allies worldwide.
Iran did not attack any country in 200 years.
Israel as of recently has been attacking its neighbors every 2-3 years.
Iran is only suspected of developing nuclear weapon, which, even if true, would be more than justified by being in close neighborhood to nuclear nations, and by being threatened with actual nuclear attack by us and Israel. Not doing anything to defend their nation would be very irresponsible. But, even having no nuclear weapon, Iran is a member of NNPT and allows regular inspections on their territory, none of which have found any evidence of any violations.
Israel does possess undeclared nuclear weapon, is not a member of NNPT, and does not allow inspections.
So who is posing "an increasingly dangerous risk" here? Hopefully, during your trip and discussions, when you hear from Israeli diplomats about the necessity to stop Iran's nuclear program, you will have the balls to ask about Israel's own undeclared nuclear program - and not only program, but the actual undeclared weapons of mass destruction.
As for being "our ally", I challenge you to name one single historical event when Israel did something, anything positive to our country. That we are Israel's ally, is no doubt - there's neverending stream of all kinds of support from us to them, financial aid in billions of dollars being only one of many. Now please name one single positive piece going from Israel to us, in any time. Attack on our ship Liberty, selling our secrets to Russians, and provoking us into armed conflicts with Arab countries don't count.

I find it bizarre and disturbing that so many Senators and Representatives would dutifully fly around the world for a nice long dog-and-pony show from Israel. They represent the USA, not Israel. Israel is not the 51st State.
Let me make it simple: USA. Israel. Choose one.

You see Mr. Meehan, the days of jews as eternal victims is well and truly over. Call it anti-Semitism if you wish, we no longer care (if we ever did). The liars and thieves of Israel (who generally aren't Semites anyway) now stand exposed in the open for what they are. I hope you read these comments and start getting a sense of what non-jews really think of our Chosen Superiors. But you've already said you are going so even if you change your mind (if your allowed to) you still stand exposed as a willing traitor to your people. And like so many American politicians you deserve the fate of the traitor.

More proof that our government is nothing more than a puppet government of
Israel, with America as its colony. Our money and weapons flow everyday to
Israel, so there is more for them and less for us. Also, both parties are equally
corrupt and treasonous!
Mr Meehan, if patriots ever take back this country, you and your fellow traitors are going to be swimming for Israel!

I am sick to death of Israel's subversion of our political process. I am sicker still of the craven, traitorous, congressmen, on their knees with their hands out begging to do the bidding of a foriegn power. Why is Israel getting billions when Americans are out of work and our schools are all but shutting down. Enough is enough! Some day there will be a rightious back lash, and it may not be just at the polls, and these craven Israel firster fifth columnists get their just deserts.

Do us all a favor while you are over there enjoying the hookers at our expense, ( Yeah, I know the fake jews claim the visit is on their dime, but we all know they just take it out of the $ billions we send them every year and maybe they take a little of it out of the bribe budget they were going to give you),
and tell those jew bastards we are sick and tired of all their war mongering and war crimes. Tell them if they want a pay raise next year they need to go pick their own fight with Syria and Iran and leave us out of it because we are going to be needing all our troops back home next year when the dollar collapses and the riots begin!
Also, why don't you and your 80 congress critter buddies and assorted hookers and homos that make up your delegation do us another large favor and just stay over there permenently.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give us on either of these pressing issues.

It is my sincere wish that you and the other 80 traitors to this country find that pathetic parasitic country so wonderful that you all stay there! A friend of Israel is no friend of this country so please don't come back!! Further, regarding Iran, not once has anyone in our govt ever provided proof that Iran supports terrorist groups and if you think we are just going to take your word for it, then you're crazy. Iran is not developing nuclear weapons and even if they were, they are no threat to us! Israel is our greatest enemy in the ME. Israel has nuclear weapons. And they wouldn't hesitate to use them on us. Oh wait - is that why you are bending over backwards to kiss their butts? Have they threatened the US if you don't play along?

You refer to Hezbollah as "a terrorist group sponsored by Iran." I remind that apart from Israel, a mere five countries designate Hezbollah as a "terrorist group." They are the U.S., Britain, Australia, the Netherlands and Canada whose governments are firmly in the pocket of the pro-Israel lobby. Also, to refer to Israelis as our "allies" is absurd. As a thoroughly documented racist/expansionist/occupier oppressor state, Israel is in fact our number one geopolitical liability, a millstone around America's neck.

Maybe instead of traveling across the world to visit your paymasters you should spend the time studying the US Constitution.
_______
and so forth.
So whaddya think?
How free should freedom of expression be?
Should constituents be free to express their assessments of their representatives actions only when they are attached to a campaign donation, or only when they are in line with the prevailing winds, or does free mean free?
1:30 PM PT: UPDATE: Surprising that many comments are upset with Meehan's constituents. I thought their voicing of outrage would be understood as democracy in action, and Meehan's act of erasing them was akin to the Chinese govt shutting down internet.
Meehan should only listen to what he wants to hear and not what his constituents are telling him, is that right?
How would you suggest voters and taxpayers get the message across to their congressional representatives -- and to Israel and the persons in US who advocate for Israel -- that taxpayers prefer that Israel not occupy such a privileged place in American political system?
If media shuts out critique of Israel, and if Congress rides roughshod over the expressed sentiments of the American people, what avenues are left?
Obviously, people are upset about the US relationship with Israel.
That Israel advocates have been able to keep a cork on the pressure does not mean that the pressure is not there. It seems a foolish and dangerous proposition to deny that the American people are getting fed up with US's Israel-centric policy.
Instead of sweeping the tension under the rug, Meehan would do far better to expose the entire situation -- shed as much sunlight as possible on it -- it's obvious, it's real, it's serious, it's not going to go away by erasing electronic comments. A genuine leader would understand that he has a major problem on his hands and go about listening to his constituents and resolving the problem, rather than stick his head in the sand.
7:35 PM PT: several commenters have said this diary came from a website 'Mondowischer." I googled Mondowischer, came up with this, --which matches the Phil Weiss name mentioned in another comment here.
Is that the place you are all going on about?
it does not have an article about Meehan on the front page -- the front page topic is about the lack of evidence to support Israel's claim that Gaza carried out the attack at Eilat.
