As you can see, Newt Gingrich's surge is showing no signs of relenting—he continues to open up the widest leads of any candidate thus far in the campaign, and given that all his baggage is so widely known, it's not clear what any of his opponents can do to bring him down. The secret to Gingrich's success is that he is managing to run even with Romney among moderate Republicans while opening up a huge lead with conservatives. As Steve
wrote yesterday, Gingrich is doing particularly well with tea party supporters, winning 35% of their vote compared to 4% for Romney. Given that Gingrich and Romney have
roughly the same appeal to non-tea party supporters, that's major league trouble for Mitt.
