So, why in the world should you get a subscription to Daily Kos?
Sure there are benefits, like the fact that you won’t see the ads anymore or the new photo sharing service and access to the news photo library that will come in the first three months of next year, but those are more in the way of perks.
I’ve been reading and writing at Daily Kos for coming on six years. In that time I have seen the community grow and fight and grow and bond and grow and ... er, grow. The quality of the writing has gone up and the stories reported and discussed have expanded.
This has all been very organic but it did not happen by accident. What started out as a place for Markos to talk about the political world as he saw it has, under the direction of him and others, become a veritable clearing house of Democratic and democratic political thought.
This is what your subscription will help support and grow.
For me, Daily Kos is a daily part of my life. I started posting here to work on my writing and argument skills. And boy howdy how that has worked out! This is a place where you can find folks to support or tear apart your arguments, sometimes the same folks in the same thread!
It is a place that deeply cares for its community members. There is more to being an activist than just thinking about and acting on politics. There has to be the human component. Daily Kos fulfills both of those requirements in spades.
Time and again I have seen the community rally around its members in grief or crisis or just when people are feeling their lowest. It takes a measure of courage to reach out to people you only know on the internet and pour out your troubles to them. There is always the chance that you’ll be rejected and crushed.
But here we have a community that will come to the moral (and occasionally financial) support of those who we’ve come to know. This makes Daily Kos a fairly rare community on the Internet, the way that we will, in our own ways and within our own means, support those who are just members of the community, just because they are members.
This is why a subscription is really an important thing, the small amount of money from us that keeps this place we’ve all come to value for myriad reasons going and growing.
It is axiomatic on the internet that you are either growing or dying. Since anyone reading this values the Daily Kos, it is worth supporting.
We’re talking about $100 for a lifetime membership, but only until the end of the year. After that it is going to be $40 a year, a mere $.11 a day, for what you get from the site, that is a bargain in anyone’s book.
With that kind of donation, you will be supporting the work of the site and the great folks who do that work. You will be making sure that the Tech Team has the brain power to keep tweaking and improving the site.
You will be assuring that during the run up to a very important election cycle (well, they are all important, aren’t they?) Daily Kos will have the news and thought and action and energy to help move the national conversation in the direction that it desperately needs to be moved.
There you have it, Kossacks, the reasons that I think you should skip just one coffee drink a month for the whole year and subscribe to Daily Kos. If you value what you get here, if you feel like it provides a service, then please consider subscribing now.
If you don’t subscribe, you’ll still be able to get all the great writing and reporting, you’ll still be able to participate in the community and you’ll still be able to see the ads (if that is your thing go for it!), but if you subscribe you can be assured that this community you value will continue to survive, grow and thrive.
The floor is yours!
