Another Hostage

The first hostages were unemployment insurance and tax cuts for the middle class. This is nothing compared to the current hostage, the federal budget. After that will come the debt ceiling hostage.

Not long ago many were talking about how wonderful President Obama was for wringing a few concessions out of republicans. I was pissed, because the larger hostages, the federal budget and the debt ceiling were still held. So now the time is coming and we are again threatened, only this time the threat is so much larger. The threat is government shutdown if republicans do not get their way.

The game is on. The republicans are saying that if the democrats do not enable republicans to get the debilitating budget cuts they want then they, the republicans, will allow the debate to continue for a short time with smaller cuts. Then in a short time, 2 weeks, the process will repeat with yet more cuts. Keep the cuts coming and keep taking small slices. I think of this as killing the victim slowly and painfully. No stake though the hear, just a little bit of skin here or there.

Worse, it may work. Everyone thinks the budget can be cut. After all Obama and many democrats have said so. The president's 2012 cuts hurt people hurting the most, so why not start there for 2011 cuts. Just keep hurting those who can least afford the pain. Just hurt them again until the budget is balanced. After all anyone who wants to work can find a job, all they need is a little more pain to encourage them. The republicans will keep the "end game" hidden as long as possible. After all who really wants to know they are being killed via small cuts.

There are two approaches that I believe will help. One is to keep asking, where is your budget Mr. Boehner, Mr. Ryan, and Mr. McConnell? How are you guys going to achieve a balanced budget through spending cuts? Let us know please. The second approach is to really shut the government down. That means really furlough the flight controllers. Really let the prisoners out of federal prisons. Really end border check points. I mean shut the whole fucking government down. No more Medicare checks to doctors. No more social security. Start pulling troops out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Germany, . . . immediately. Yeah, a real government shutdown, as opposed to keeping essential services running. Let us all feel the pain.

Otherwise we will face death through a thousand cuts.
