But we need to understand that the political system is totally corrupt--to the core. So as we engage in it we need to be realistic about the outcome of our efforts.
There are signs all over about how the fascist system is being implemented step by step. A completely corrupt government that has actively participated in the cover up of huge crimes, as Matt Taibbi reports in his later exposé "Is the SEC Covering Up Wall Street Crimes?: A whistle-blower claims that over the past two decades, the agency has destroyed records of thousands of investigations, whitewashing the files of some of the nation's worst financial criminals."
The round up of immigrants across the country in ALEC-backed for-profit prisons: "Jailing Undocumented Immigrants in Big Business."
And this criminal international banking cartel is not done yet. The current stock market meltdown just means that they are extracting trillions of dollars from the country's coffers, and from your 401k and retirement account. Check your balance...
Are there any progressive groups or any leaders out there addressing this issue? Or is it the case that this is not on anybody's radar screen? If so, we are toast. This nascent fascism needs to be confronted head on, right now, or it will be too late.
People have to start thinking about uniting, big time. About helping each other. About protecting leaders that rise up to challenge the system. Leaders like Lorena Gonzalez in San Diego, who focuses on worker's unions rights. As reported in the diary by WePartyPatriots, she has been targeted by Republican party thugs, who approached her home in the middle of the night and smashed her front windows (according to her account).
One idea would be for progressive groups to establish regional teams of people who could act as support to those who are targeted. For example, if there is a particular effective leader in New York who is getting some traction, and gets the attention of thugs on the Right, aside from reporting acts of intimidation or violence to the authorities, could there be people who volunteer to provide support and/or protection?
When this sort of thing happens to people, you won't believe what a simple visit or call to let them know they have support and that people are watching their backs, could do to help them feel better; to let them know they are not alone and that we appreciate and value what they are doing.
Yes, I'm aware this sounds kind of alarmist. And things right now are kind of confusing, which contributes to the belief by some that we are still in normal times. But if leaders on the Left wait to start thinking about these things until it is painfully obvious they needed to be thought about, again, it may be too late.
This thing is happening fast--the consolidation of power by a fascist Right.
If the populace were not in a state of confusion and under extreme manipulation, by now there would have been a huge uprising around the country, with months-long protests, and many other resistance movement actions (non-violent). Maybe the October 2011 planned long-term protest in Washington will be the beginning of something; or perhaps it will take longer.
Eventually it will happen, once enough people realize the situation. I just hope it's not too late.
