I know that Louie Gohmert represents one of the most insanely Republican districts in the country--an R+21 district in east Texas. But even allowing for that, you would think that some things would be just too idiotic even for someone in a district that red to say.
Brooklynbadboy has a diary on the the rec list in which Gohmert--apparently the only 2nd Amendment extremist to speak publicly this weekend--suggested that if Sandy Hook's teachers had been carrying, Friday's massacre would have never happened. But believe it or not, Gohmert actually said something loonier than that during this soliloquy. He actually suggested that the 20 kids found dead in that school had defensive wounds. No, I'm not kidding.
GOHMERT: Once we have this actually open dialogue about the situation, Chris, you find out that -- and John Lott has done some great investigation and study into this. Every mass killing of more than three people in recent history has been in a place where guns were prohibited. These -- except for one, they choose this place, they know no one ill be armed.
You know, having been a judge and having reviewed photographs of these horrific scenes and knowing that children have these defensive wounds, gun shots through their arms and hands as they try to protect themselves, and, hearing the heroic stories of the principal, lunging, trying to protect -- Chris, I wish to god she had had an M-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out and she didn’t have to lung heroically with nothing in her hands, but she takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids.
ThinkProgress
has the video.
Let's see if we've got this right. These kids were shot to pieces with an assault rifle that is basically a minor-league version of a military rifle---as many as 11 times in some cases--and they somehow had DEFENSIVE wounds? If the NRA's base sincerely thinks this, then it's even more of a reason for truly honest gun owners to walk out and leave that organization as an empty shell. And it might be a reason for Baylor to demand that Gohmert give back his law degree.
This video needs to go viral. Granted, it's going to be a longshot to get rid of Gohmert. Ever since dumping Max Sandlin in the heavily gerrymandered 1st in 2004, he hasn't gotten less than 68 percent of the vote. But somehow, you'd think even voters in districts this red have standards.
