Oh, look. It's flip-flop o'clock again.
In disagreeing with Todd Akin's statement in the mildest terms Mitt Romney's campaign could possibly string together, Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said:
[A] Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape.
Which is pretty interesting, considering Paul Ryan co-sponsored the
Sanctity of Life Act, which defines a fertilized egg as a person and grants it "all the legal and constitutional attributes and privileges of personhood." No exceptions.
Paul Ryan also co-sponsored HR 3, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion" bill in which Republicans tried to redefine rape so that it only applied to "forcible" rape so those fake rape victims would stop exploiting loopholes to cash in on fabulous gifts and prizes. Republicans pulled that part out of the bill so everyone would stop criticizing them, and then they tried to sneak it back in anyway.
Yeah. Paul Ryan was one of those guys.
As for Mitt Romney, well, as always, it's difficult to track his many positions on abortion and rape and what he'd fight to protect and what he wants to get rid of. Here's one position:
HUCKABEE: Would you have supported a constitutional amendment that would have established the definition of life at conception?
ROMNEY: Absolutely.
Here's another:
"Mitt Romney is pro-life, and as he has said previously, he is supportive of efforts to ensure recognition that life begins at conception. He believes these matters should be left up to states to decide," [spokeswoman Gail Gitcho] said.
Constitutional amendment, leave it to the states—eh, whatever. And then there was
this one:
I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. [...] I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it and I sustain and support that law and the right of the woman to make that choice. [...] And you will not see me wavering on that."
But hey, that was way back in 1994, and it's not as if he promised he'd never-ever-pinky-swear waver on that.
This kind of flip-floppery won't make the extremists happy. They hate abortion, they hate women who are raped (most of whom are lying anyway), and they hate that Mitt Romney isn't really one of them.
Support, oppose, sometimes, never—who knows what the current Romney/Ryan position is? But I'll bet you $10,000 it'll change again before too long.
