We need a "Defend Marriage From This Guy" Act
Newt Gingrich, funnyman
On gay marriage, Gingrich anticipates that the GOP will be "torn" on the issue, although he expects that most will continue to back traditional marriage.
In contrast, he predicted that Democrats who don’t kowtow to the party line on gay marriage would face a difficult political future in their party.
"What should the Democrats do about the Democrats who have still refused to cave into the gay-rights lobby?" Gingrich asked. "How likely is it that at the 2016 convention a Democrat will be allowed to make a pro-traditional marriage speech? Zero. Maybe a negative number."
He says that as if it's a bad thing that Democrats are ridding themselves of bigots. But this isn't like 1964 when the Civil Rights Act cost Democrats the South as the Dixiecrat bigots deserted en masse to the GOP. This time around, the bigotry in question is unpopular.
So yeah, there won't be a Democrat at the 2016 convention spewing bigotry about gays, just like there wasn't one in 2012 and 2008 and was there even one in 2004 or 2000? Bigotry is not in our party's DNA, and the dwindling number of anti-equality Democrats left almost all represent difficult states or districts full of ... yup, conservatives.
Really, Newt is trying to claim that it's liberals who are bigoted because they don't tolerate the bigots. That's like claiming that our society is bigoted because we frown on the KKK. Or that we're bigoted against child molesters because we throw them in jail. So by refusing to allow conservative retrogrades to deny people their equal rights, it is the retrogrades who are actually suffering persecution.
Conservatives sure love to play the victims, and they're free to continue whining about their sad lot in life. But no one is buying it outside of their ideological bubble. America is moving forward, at breakneck speed, leaving the GOP behind and isolated. They'll either evolve and someday be competitive again, or they'll suffer the fate of the dinosaurs (and whigs).
Not that the GOP does "evolution".
