While we have all been celebrating Minnesota joining the ranks of Marriage Equality, a nation that most of us weren't expecting now has Marriage Equality nationwide!
Brazil's Supreme Court ruled in 2011 that Homosexuality could not be used as a basis of denying a marriage certificate, but it has fallen to the State Courts to require that all notaries in that state issue marriage certificates equally. More than a third of the state courts had done so, but some like Rio de Janerio had done it piecemeal.
However today things changed again http://www.globalpost.com/...
The National Council of Justice, which oversees the Brazilian judicial system and is headed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court, said government offices that issue marriage licenses had no standing to reject gay couples.
Now this can still be appealed to the Brazilian Supreme Court, but observers have found that the likelihood of an appeal being upheld are fairly small.
