This new ad from Mitch McConnell's tea party challenger Matt Bevin sums up in 30 seconds exactly why Mr. Turtle has a big problem on his hands:
After pushing the Wall Street Bailout through the U.S. Senate, Mitch McConnell bragged: "This has been the Senate at its finest."
And what are fact checkers saying about Mudslinging Mitch's latest attacks on conservative Matt Bevin?
"Misleading." "Doesn't add up." "Like Obama campaign attacks."
After thirty years in Washington, voting for one bailout after another, slinging mud is all Senator McConnell has left.
The thing about this ad is that its critique of McConnell will resonate with Democrats and independents, not just the tea party faithful. Even if McConnell ends up defeating Bevin, spending the next nine months fending off attacks that he's got nothing left but mudslinging is the last thing he wants to be doing—but it should be a dream come true for Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes. Bevin's attacks on McConnell may come from the right, but when he criticizes Mitch McConnell as a politician who has been in Washington, D.C. for far too long, he's on the exact same page as Grimes. At a minimum, his primary attacks will tee up Grimes for the general election.
I'm sure McConnell is desperately searching for something that will allow him to make Bevin the focus of the primary, but if he can't do that, he's in for a rough ride. McConnell's entire reelection strategy has been to make the campaign focus on his opponents, or lack thereof. But now he has not one but two opponents, and the one thing they both agree on is that McConnell is the issue—and that after thirty years, it's time for him to go.
