These kids will sure be impressed with John Boehner's cheap rhetoric as their families are torn apart by deportation!
House Speaker John Boehner is Mr. "I Solved Everything" today. First, he's already won the 2014 elections
. It's quite the brilliant scheme, actually: take everything they said in 2012, and then say it again! That way, they don't have to print up new signs or slogans or position papers or talking points.
Of course, they lost in 2012, but that was before a website didn't work for two months. Now, the public will be receptive to a message of taking away people's health care because Obama promised not to take away people's health care, but some people had their health care taken away! Trust me. It's all very smart.
But still ... what about that pesky Latino problem? There are a lot of them, and they keep growing! And if they keep voting Democratic by the same 2-1 (or better) margin we've seen the last few cycles, Republicans are in deep shit. But don't worry! Boehner has a solution for that as well!
John Boehner is planning to unveil a set of Republican principles for immigration reform before President Obama's State of the Union address, aiming to show the GOP is not hostile to legislation that might win them Hispanic voters.
According to House leadership and immigration-policy aides, the principles will be broad, nebulous even, and heavily focused on Republicans' favorite immigration issue—border security. It will not include any concrete proposal, they said. Indeed, the wording is likely to be intentionally squishy, giving lawmakers lots of room to maneuver.
"We can win in 2014 without resolving it. We can't win in 2016 without resolving it," said Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn.
But no matter what happens, Boehner will come out a winner just for the effort.
Brilliant! They can say "here are some broad, squishy, vague, not very concrete statements of principle that the border fence needs to be, say, 10 feet taller, -ish, we don't want be too specific, maybe add some crocodiles, with lasers of course—scratch that—it could be machine guns! We want to remain nebulous, of course", and ta-da! Latinos won't hate Republicans anymore!
Because, you know, Latinos are fucking morons who can't figure out when they're being played by asshole Republicans and their cheap rhetoric. Deliver some real results, and maybe then Boehner will be a "winner" of something.
