This past Monday, BP spilled an estimated 39 barrels of tar sands cride into Lake Michigan from their Whiting refinery.

I played around with Google earth and used their "distance" tool to find that there is 7.5 miles from BP's wastewater treatment plant and Chicago's 63rd Street water intake crib.

Hammond, Indiana is in even worse shape. Their water intake crib is a mere 2 miles from the BP wastewater treatment plant.

The Superintendent of the Hammond Water Works assures that there is nothing to worry about:

Lake Michigan is a source of drinking water to millions of people throughout the Chicago area, but the spill took place nowhere near any water utility intake pipes, said Charles Pietrucha, superintendent of the Hammond Water Works filtration plant. The Hammond utility, which provides water to 300,000 people throughout Northwest Indiana and Chicago's southeast suburbs, is monitoring water quality extra closely after the spill, though it was never close to contaminating the supply of drinking water.
Hammond's two intake pipes are both a few miles northeast of the spill, and also are located at least 20 feet under the surface.

Two miles is "nowhere near" according to Mr. Pietrucha. Trust us. We're not like those unfortunates in West Virginia with their nasty water.
